What the check does
It opens a real TLS connection to the site and reports the certificate the server actually presents — the issuer, the validity window, the days remaining, the protocol and cipher agreed, and every hostname the certificate covers.
That last point catches a common and confusing fault: a certificate can be perfectly valid and still be for the wrong name, so the browser warns anyway. Checking the covered hostnames tells you which it is.
Why certificates expire so often now
Certificates used to last a year or more. Most now last about 90 days, and the industry is moving shorter still. That is better for security and worse for anyone renewing by hand — it turns a yearly diary note into something that has to be automatic.
When one does lapse, nothing degrades gracefully. Browsers put a full-page red warning in front of your site, and almost nobody clicks past it. The site is effectively offline while looking, from the server’s point of view, perfectly healthy.
What it costs you in search
HTTPS has been a ranking signal for years, and an invalid certificate is worse than none at all: crawlers that cannot establish a secure connection may simply stop fetching. AI crawlers behave the same way — a site they cannot read securely is a site they cannot quote.
