What DNS decides
DNS is what points your domain at your website and your email. When a site will not load, or mail stops arriving, these records are the first place to look — and usually the last, because the answer is nearly always here.
This tool queries public resolvers directly, so you see what the rest of the world sees rather than a copy cached by your own computer. That is the difference that matters when you have just moved host and are waiting to find out whether the change has taken.
The records worth understanding
A and AAAA point the name at a server. MX decides where email is delivered — and it is entirely independent of the website, which is why a site can move host without the mail following, or stop following. NS names the authoritative servers for the whole zone, and changing those moves everything at once.
TXT records carry the rules that keep your mail out of spam folders. SPF says which servers may send as you; DMARC says what receivers should do about anything that fails.
Why the email records matter more than they look
Without SPF and DMARC, anyone can send email that appears to come from your domain, and your own mail is far more likely to be filtered. This check flags whether both are present.
For a business whose enquiries arrive by email, that is not a technical footnote. A quotation that lands in a spam folder is a job you never hear about.
